Utilities

Some hydro and gas generating utilities are owned and operated by government agencies, others by private industry. Both are believed to be good corporate citizens with employees (usually unionized) participating vigorously in health and safety programs. It helps management enormously when workers are safety oriented and accept their safety responsibilities. At the same time, management is still responsible to provide a continuing series of generic training programs such as confined spaces, fire prevention, lockout/tagout procedures, and respiratory safety. But, while utilities are basically manufacturers, there is one major difference. With the public very concerned about global warming and greenhouse gases, utilities are being seen as major polluters. SafetyWorld guides are available to educate workers about the dangers of environmental pollution. This means additional care has to be taken to reduce, recycle or reuse solid, liquid or gaseous waste materials. Employees facing these hazards usually place a greater reliance on personal protective equipment (PPE) and on process safety management programs used to control and correct operating procedures.
