Moving machine parts have the potential to cause severe workplace injuries, such as crushed fingers or hands, amputations or even death.
Because different machines create different hazards, eliminating or controlling injuries through the use of machine guards is essential. These guards provide protection against rotating machine parts, reciprocating arms, moving belts, meshing gears, cutting teeth, and any parts that impact or shear.
Recognizing these dangers is management’s first step toward protecting workers but taking the second step is vital. Workers must be continually educated to follow company safety rules, respect machine guards and remain alert at all times.
